چکیده
b one of the main early complaints of cataract patients, even when they exhibit only mild glare. problems as measured by standard tests. is that alare impairs their night driving In order to better measure the patients’~mpair&nt, glare tes?s shouldhclude measurements of the alam effect in conditions more similar to those found in night driving. iirhen driving at night the ambient light is very low, onc&ng headlights present a transient temporal pattern, and the objects of interest often appear initially in the peripheral visual field. Thus, three impottant characteristics of glare in night driving am that the ambient illuminance is in the scotopic/mesopic range, the detection stimulus is in the periphery, and the glare source is transient. Most of the current glare testers measure glare only at photopic levels, and all the glare tests that we know of use only steady smuces of glare with foveal discriminations. We studied all three conditions. Methods: Detection stimuli were presented on a computer monitor, and the glare source was a high-intensity hmgsten bulb. Stimuli were presented at different times following the sudden onset of glare, in the fovea and peripheral visual field. Results: Disability glare effects are stronger in the periphery than in the fovea. The difference between the transient glare effect and the steady glare effect is greater in the periphery than in the fovea. The duration of the transient effect is also longer in the periphery than in the fovea, an: the recovery time from glare is longer in the periphery. Conclusions: Transient glare effects, such as those often encountered in real world, are much stronger than those tested with a steady glare ~muce in the fovea, and even more so in the periphery. Existing glare testers seriously underestimate disability glare effects in everyday life.

Role of the tear film in the optical quality of the human eye.
This paper reviews recent studies of the role of the tear film in the optical quality of the eye. Recent investigations focus on the dynamics of the tear film after a blink and its important role in the optical quality of the eye. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand the optical and visual impact of tear-film breakup in normal eyes and dry eyes. It was noted that pat...
متن کاملTear ferning in normal dogs and dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca
This study evaluates tear ferning as an ancillary technique for the evaluation of the canine tear film in normal eyes and eyes affected by keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Thirty dogs with KCS and 50 control dogs with normal tear film were evaluated with a full ophthalmoscopic examination and a Schirmer tear test type 1 (STT) determined before tear samples were obtained from the medial canthus...
متن کاملDynamic changes in the tear film in dry eyes.
PURPOSE To examine the dynamics of the tear film in patients with dry eye by measuring the wavefront aberrations of the anterior surface of the film. METHODS Anterior surface aberrations for a 7-mm pupil were determined in 13 patients with dry eye at 1-second time intervals, for 15 seconds after a blink. The aberrations were calculated from the elevations provided by corneal topography. All d...
متن کاملTear film osmolarity: determination of a referent for dry eye diagnosis.
PURPOSE To determine new referents, or cutoff levels for tear film hyperosmolarity in the diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and to assess their effectiveness in independent patient groups. METHOD A meta-analysis was performed on published data for tear osmolarity in samples of normal eyes and various subtypes of dry eye, and pooled estimates of the mean and standard deviations for...
متن کاملComparison of hyaluronic acid-containing topical eye drops with carbomer-based topical ocular gel as a tear replacement in canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca: A prospective study in twenty five dogs
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a hyaluronic acid containing eye drop in ameliorating ocular surface pathology and discomfort in canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Twenty five dogs with KCS treated with a topical carbomer (CA)-based tear replacement gel were moved to treatment with a hyaluronic acid (HA)-containing tear replacement eye drop. Dogs were subject to a fu...
